  16. Alfonso VI, byname Alfonso the Brave, Spanish Alfonso el Bravo, (born before June 1040—died 1109, Toledo, Castile), king of Leon (1065–70) and king of reunited Castile and Leon (1072–1109), who by 1077 had proclaimed himself “emperor of all Spain” (imperator totius Hispaniae). His oppression of his Muslim vassals led to the invasion of Spain by an Almoravidarmy from North Africa (1086). His name is also associated with the national hero of Spain, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (El Cid), who was alternatively his enemy and indifferent supporter.

The son of Ferdinand I, King of León and Count of Castile and his wife, Queen Sancha, Alfonso was a "Leonese infante [prince] with Navarrese and Castilian blood. His paternal grandparents were Sancho Garcés III, king of Pamplona and his wife Muniadona of Castile, and his maternal grandparents were Alfonso V of León (after whom he was probably named) and his first wife Elvira Menéndez.

The year of Alfonso's birth is not recorded in the medieval documentation. According to one of the authors of the Anonymous Chronicle of Sahagún, who met the monarch and was present at his death, he died at age 62 after reigning 44 years. This indicates that he was born in the second half of 1047[10] or in the first half of 1048. Pelagius of Oviedo wrote that Alfonso was 79 when he died, but that would place his birth around 1030, before his parents' marriage.

He was so famous and feared that when he died his army dessed him and got on his hourse, so the Muslims flee scared.

    AlfonsoV

Alfonso was born in Sintra, the senand son of king Edward of Portugal by his wife Eleanos of Aragon.Followin the death of his older brother, infante Joao (1429-1433),Alfonso acceded to the position of heir apparent and was made the first Prince of Portugal by his father, who souht to emulate the English Cour’t coustom of a dynastic title that distinguished the heir apparent from the other children of the monarca. He was only sit years old when he succeded his father in 1438.During his minority,Alfonso V was placed under the regencia of his mother in accordance with a will of his late fater. As both a foreigner and a woman, the queen was not a popular choice for gegent.Opposition rose and with out any inportant ally among the Portuguese aristocracia other than Alfonso, count of barcelos, the illegitimate half brother of king Edward, the queen’s position was untenable. In 1439,the portuguese cortes (assembly of the Kingdom) decided to replace the queen with Peter,Duke of combra(dom Pedro) the King’s oldest uncle.
